TIMP informal meeting: "Laser Applications in Medical Technology"

TIMP informal Meeting

TIMP members listening to Prof. Dickmann

Could Laser Technology help to create new products? This stands behind the lectures from Prof. h.c. G. von Bally, Laboratory for Biophysics, Universitätsklinik Münster and Prof. Dr.-Ing. K. Dickmann, head of the Laser Center at the University of Applied Sciences in Münster.

The TIMP members learned that Prof. von Bally's laboratory is involved in the development and employment of laser measuring techniques for medical diagnostics. These techniques, e.g. holography, interferometry and speckle techniques permit high-resolution, contactless, non destructive, multidimensional movement -, structure and form analyses, image processing and pattern recognition techniques, temperature -, pressure and flow measurements as well as investigations of the breaking behavior.

While Prof. von Bally mostly works with low-power laser systems Prof. Dickmann's laser system come along with systems an order of magnitude more powerful. He presents the Laser Demonstration Center as an institution propagating the possibilities of laser machining for small and medium-sized companys. As examples for applications in medical technology he shows small cannulas with laser cut holes in the range of 100µm and a small catheter tip with blind holes.

Last but not least Mr. Guennewig from the Wirtschaftsförderungsgesellschaft Münster presents why Münster is attractive for companies in the health sector.

After the lectures the TIMP members uses the opportunity to discuss with the speakers their ideas and  the ways to collaborate.
