Braille Terminal

Braille terminal

ALVA is a leading international producer of computer terminals and screen reading software for visually handicapped users. These users are often still compelled to use the DOS operating system. In co-operation with Indes and 3T, ALVA has developed a Windows-based Braille terminal. The device and its associated software translates the visual screen-oriented information from Windows into Braille. At the same time, the terminal takes over the control functions of the mouse as well as part of the keyboard functions.

Ergonomic and distinctive quality

Indes and ALVA have opted for a striking design and a high quality
perception. For visually handicapped users, this specifically means:
- well-balanced ergonomics;
- total absence of any form of noise;
- and operating elements with outstanding tactile features.

The colour scheme has been carefully chosen, keeping in mind the environment and the co-decision-makers. The functions of the terminal have been selected so as to ensure that the device remains as small as possible and markedly flat. The total number of hand movements needed has been kept to a bare minimum, with the outline of the device itself pointing the way to the most important navigational functions.

Choosing the best solution

When developing a Braille terminal, choosing the materials to be used is extremely important to the ultimate quality of the product. The operating elements must be distinctive and feel stable: the feedback of information must be clear and simple. In order to achieve this, all the buttons were individually designed. What's more, Indes also opted for an exotic blend of switches and rubber keypads, making the feedback of information extremely direct while the noise level remains low.

Terminals tend to be intensively used at various locations. A robust casing is therefore necessary. The Indes designers and engineers selected a mix of polycarbonate and ABS. Despite the small production batch, injection moulding appeared to be economically feasible. It also provides the benefits of large design freedom and a stable construction between the casing and the cells. Because of the limited height of the terminal, a special internal power supply was developed.
